The Health Pulse
Beyond Clean Eating | Episode 63
Your meals are clean, your ingredients are organic, and your macros are on point—so why are you still feeling off? In this episode of The Health Pulse, we explore the disconnect between a "perfect diet on paper" and real-world symptoms like fatigue, stubborn weight gain, poor digestion, or afternoon crashes.
We unpack how functional lab testing exposes hidden issues that food tracking apps can't—like B12 or iron deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, low-grade inflammation, or early insulin resistance. You'll learn how these underlying imbalances silently derail even the best nutrition plans and why symptoms like post-meal cravings, energy dips, or brain fog are signals worth investigating—not ignoring.
Best of all, we explain how convenient at-home blood testing empowers you to go beyond guesswork and build a plan that matches your biology—not just your plate.

Speaker 2:Okay, so you've cleaned up your diet right, eating more vegetables, cutting out the processed foods, maybe you're even tracking macros. But despite doing all that, something still feels off. You know you're tired. Maybe the scale isn't moving, your digestion feels kind of unpredictable and that 3 pm energy crash hits you every single day. Does that sound familiar? Okay, let's unpack this. We're going to put on our detective hats today, really dig into why just eating clean might not be enough, because the truth is how your body uses the food you give it. Well, that depends on a whole lot of internal stuff.
Speaker 3:We're aiming to uncover those hidden roadblocks, the things that even the most, let's say, perfect diet can't fix all by itself. Yeah, and what's really fascinating here, I think, is this core idea that, well, you can't fix what you don't measure. Your body isn't just some simple calculator where calories in equals calories out. It's this dynamic, really intricate system. It's constantly influenced by things like hormones, how efficiently you digest, inflammation levels, your stress load, even your toxin burden. So even if you're super diligent, eating all the right foods, these underlying dysfunctions can mean you feel stuck, you underperform. This deep dive is really about revealing what your diet isn't telling you, those subtle signals your body might be sending out.
Speaker 4:All right, and here's where it gets really, really interesting. We're going to talk about the key lab tests that can shine a light on these unseen problems. We'll explore how crucial factors like, say, nutrient deficiencies or hormones or your blood sugar balance, how they truly affect your health results. No matter what's on your plate, it's so tempting, is it? Just think in terms of calories. But your metabolism is dynamic. Food quality absolutely matters 100%, but so does your unique biology. Like you could be eating, I don't know, organic veggies, wild-caught salmon. It sounds perfect, right, but you could still feel totally exhausted. If you're quietly low in iron, maybe, or if your thyroid's a bit sluggish. Or another example maybe going plant-based, which is great in many ways, could unknowingly lead to low B12 or zinc, and those are just essential for energy, immunity, brain function, the works. So the key takeaway here really is if your symptoms don't quite match up with your super diligent diet, something deeper is probably going on under the surface.
Speaker 3:Absolutely. If your diet looks solid on paper but your health isn't quite reflecting it, well, lab work can be a total game changer. These tests really uncover the hidden imbalances that might be blocking your progress. You know, despite your best efforts with food, should we dive into some of the most impactful ones?
Speaker 2:Yes, let's do it. Where do we start?
Speaker 3:Okay, first, we often look at micronutrient deficiencies. Now you might assume hey, I eat nutrient-dense food, I'm covered. But low levels are actually surprisingly common. Could be due to poor absorption, maybe some gut inflammation, or even just your body needing more because of stress or activity. And what's often missed is how a hidden deficiency can have these really widespread unexpected effects like vitamin B12. It's not just about energy, right? A quiet deficiency could be seriously messing with your memory and focus, even if you're eating well.
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 3:Or think about magnesium. Yeah, it helps muscle recovery, but it's also surprisingly vital for stabilizing your blood sugar, even if you're avoiding sweets.
Speaker 2:Huh, Didn't realize the blood sugar connection was that strong.
Speaker 3:It is. We also check for vitamin D, huge for mood, immunity, insulin sensitivity. Iron and ferritin low stores are classic for fatigue, even hair loss. And zinc critical for immunity, hormones, tissue repair.
Speaker 2:That's fascinating. So just to clarify even if someone's really careful about eating, say, iron-rich foods, they could still be low if their absorption isn't great, maybe because of gut stuff.
Speaker 3:Exactly right. It really highlights that what you put in isn't the whole story. It's about what your body does with it.
Speaker 2:Makes sense. What's next?
Speaker 3:Then there are inflammation markers. Okay, try to picture this like a silent, smoldering fire just burning low inside your body. That's kind of what chronic low-grade inflammation is like. And even if you're getting perfectly, this unseen thing can actively block fat loss. It can mess with your glucose metabolism, drain your energy, basically making you feel stuck. Markers like HSCRP high sensitivity C-reactive protein can actually reveal this silent sabotage. We also might look at homocysteine. If that's high, it can signal poor methylation, more oxidative stress and fibrinogen, which is related to clotting but also reflects systemic inflammation.
Speaker 2:A silent fire. Wow, that's a powerful way to put it. It really drives home why you could feel well fed, but still unwell.
Speaker 3:Precisely Okay. Next up, we often zero in on blood sugar and insulin markers. You might be eating incredibly clean, avoiding sugar like the plague, but you could still have unstable glucose or even early insulin resistance happening under the radar.
Speaker 2:Really, even without eating much sugar.
Speaker 3:Absolutely. This is where looking at fasting insulin is so key. Often your insulin levels start creeping up long, long before your fasting glucose number looks high on a standard test.
Speaker 2:Ah, okay. So glucose might look fine, but insulin is already working too hard.
Speaker 3:Exactly. Then there's HbA1c, which gives us that really useful three-month average picture of your blood sugar control. And while fasting, glucose is important. Like I said, it can be normal even when insulin is secretly high. We might also look at C-peptide, which tells us about how much insulin your pancreas is actually making. These markers together paint a much, much richer picture than just a single glucose reading.
Speaker 2:Got it so, moving beyond just glucose, what else?
Speaker 3:We also need to look at a comprehensive thyroid function panel, your thyroid hormones. They're like the master conductors of your entire metabolism. They regulate energy digestion, even your mood, and subclinical thyroid dysfunction meaning it's not full-blown disease yet is surprisingly common and often gets missed by just testing TSH alone.
Speaker 2:Right, I've heard that TSH isn't always enough.
Speaker 3:No, definitely not. We need to go deeper. We look at TSH, yes, but also free T3 and free T4. These show hormone production and, crucially, conversion. We also look at reverse T3, which can be high due to stress sort of putting the brakes on your thyroid. Look at reverse T3, which can be high due to stress sort of putting the brakes on your thyroid and TPO antibodies. These can reveal if you have a hidden autoimmune thyroid issue, like Hashimoto's, even if your other thyroid numbers look quote unquote normal.
Speaker 2:Wow. So it's not just the thyroid is making hormones, but how well they're being converted and used, and if your immune system is interfering. That feels like a huge potential blind spot for a lot of people.
Speaker 3:It absolutely is. And finally, we examine sex hormones and your stress response. Imbalances here can profoundly impact your energy levels, trigger stubborn cravings, cause belly fat accumulation, tank your libido, mess with menstrual cycles. And again, this can happen regardless of how meticulously you're eating.
Speaker 2:So diet alone can't fix hormonal issues? Not usually, no.
Speaker 3:Markers like cortisol, especially if we measure it at different times of day, of how meticulously you're eating. So diet alone can't fix hormonal issues Not usually no. Markers like cortisol, especially if we measure it at different times of day, show your overall stress burden and how your adrenal glands are coping. Then there's DHEAS progesterone, estrogen, testosterone. These give us a roadmap to understand mood, energy and a lot of those tricky metabolic symptoms that might otherwise just seem like a mystery.
Speaker 2:That is such a crucial point just seem like a mystery. That is such a crucial point. It feels like what all these lab results really let us do is, well, move beyond just guessing right and start actually listening to our body's specific language Because, like we've been saying, your body is constantly giving you signals, these clues, but they often get dismissed as just I don't know, a bad day or getting older. Let's maybe zero in on some of those really common clues now and see what they might be telling us about those deeper imbalances we just talked about. Connect the symptoms to the potential lab findings, Like, for example, if you're still tired all the time, like bone tired, even with balanced meals and decent sleep, that's not just normal, is it?
Speaker 3:No, it's definitely a signal.
Speaker 2:Right. It could point to low iron, maybe low B12, or that sluggish thyroid we mentioned, or maybe poor mitochondrial efficiency, meaning your cells little energy factories aren't working right, or even those hidden blood sugar swings from insulin resistance.
Speaker 3:Uh-huh, all very possible.
Speaker 2:Or how about this one Eating less nudge but not losing weight? You're meticulously cutting calories. You're tracking everything, but the scale just won't budge. Frustrating.
Speaker 3:Right, but it's often tied to things like elevated cortisol from stress or disrupted thyroid hormones or that inflammation we talked about interfering with fat metabolism or even just a mismatch between your macros your carbs, protein, fat and what your body actually needs your metabolic type.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's like your body's metabolism is stuck in the wrong gear.
Speaker 3:Exactly. It's like your body has a check engine light on, but you're just trying to put less fuel in hoping that fixes the underlying engine problem. It doesn't work.
Speaker 2:OK, what about craving sugar or carbs constantly, Even after you've had a good, clean, healthy meal? Maybe you feel hungry again really soon.
Speaker 3:Ah, yes, the craving cycle.
Speaker 2:Totally Possible causes. There could be that dysregulated blood sugar or high fasting insulin we discussed, or maybe poor satiety signaling, maybe not enough protein or healthy fat to keep you full, or even those stress-related cortisol spikes just triggering intense cravings out of nowhere.
Speaker 3:That cortisol creating link is very real for many people.
Speaker 2:Definitely. And then there's brain fog, low mood or poor focus. You know you feel like you're feeding your body well, giving it all the good stuff, but your mind just isn't sharp, it's lagging behind.
Speaker 3:Common complaint.
Speaker 2:That really calls for a deeper look, doesn't it? Maybe low vitamin D or omega-3s or zinc, or suboptimal thyroid function again, or those sex hormones being out of whack, even high homocysteine or that underlying inflammation could be culprits? And lastly, what if you feel bloated or heavy after meals? Even when you're eating whole, unprocessed foods, your digestion just feels off heavy.
Speaker 3:Yeah, that's a big clue from your gut.
Speaker 2:Could be subtle food sensitivities you haven't identified, or maybe low stomach acid, meaning you're not breaking food down well, or gut dysbiosis, that imbalance in your gut, bacteria which can mess with nutrient absorption. Or even inflammatory foods that are sort of hiding in plain sight within an otherwise clean diet.
Speaker 3:Exactly, and the key thing to remember here is that these signs, these symptoms, they don't mean your diet is bad, not at all. They just mean your body might not be ready or able to fully benefit from it. Yet they're not failures, they're actually really valuable pieces of information.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I can almost hear listeners nodding along right now thinking, oh my gosh, that's me. It feels kind of liberating, doesn't it.
Speaker 2:To realize these aren't just normal things you have to put up with, but actual signals from your body demanding attention. So, okay, what does this all mean for you? Listening, right now We've uncovered that, yeah, a healthy diet is absolutely a strong, essential foundation. You need that. But the real transformation, the real breakthroughs, often happen when that diet gets personalized to your unique biology, your symptoms. They often speak way louder than your food journal ever could and they give really clear clues that something deeper needs looking at.
Speaker 3:Yeah, absolutely. If we try to connect this to the bigger picture. Well, without testing, you're basically navigating in the dark. You're making educated guesses maybe, but still guessing. Lab testing actually tells you if your diet is truly improving things like your glucose and insulin sensitivity. Are you actually absorbing the vital nutrients from all that healthy food you're eating, or is inflammation, or maybe a hormonal imbalance, quietly blocking your progress? It gives you the concrete data you know, data you can actually act on to adjust your approach. Maybe that means tweaking your macros, maybe adding specific foods to targeted efficiency, or perhaps some targeted supplementation for a while. And the great thing is, you can even recheck these labs down the line to track your progress, to actually see the improvements happening internally.
Speaker 2:That's such a good point. The effort you put into eating well is definitely not wasted not at all. It just means your body might be telling you something more, something deeper, and lab testing can help translate those symptoms into real, actionable insights. It gives you that clarity right to stop the guesswork and start making informed decisions that actually get you results, so you can feel better faster and really unlock your potential.
Speaker 3:Which kind of raises an important question, doesn't it? If you now know that your body's response to the food matters maybe even more than the theoretical nutritional value, and you know that you can often, quite conveniently these days, get actual data on things like micronutrient levels or thyroid function or inflammation, maybe even without leaving your home for some tests, then what critical insights might you be missing right now, insights that could potentially unlock your best health?
Speaker 2:Hmm, definitely something to mull over as you continue on your journey to being well-informed and feeling your best.
